What is PBIS?

PBIS is a framework for assisting school personnel in adopting evidence-based behavioral interventions on a school-wide scale that enhances academic, social, and behavioral outcomes for all students.á PBIS is a prevention-oriented way for school personnel to (a) organize evidence-based practices, (b) improve their implementations of those practices, and (c) maximize academic not social behavior outcomes for students.á PBIS supports the success of all students.á PBIS is not a packaged curriculum, scripted interventions, or predetermined strategy.á Thus, it allows The Grow School the flexibility to successfully meet the individualized needs of all of our students in a positive, proactive environment.
á

Data-based decision-making aligns curricular instruction and behavioral supports to students and staff needs.á Schools applying PBIS begin by establishing clear expectations for behavior that are taught, modeled, and reinforced across all settings and by all staff.á This provides a host environment that supports the adoption and sustained use of effective academic and social/emotional instruction.á PBIS has proven its effectiveness and efficiency as an Evidence-Based Practice.á (Sugai & Horner, 2007)

The principles and practices of PBIS are consistent with federal education mandates such as the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004).á PBIS integrates state school improvement initiatives including Systems of Support, Standards Aligned Curriculum, and Response to Intervention to assist schools in meeting Illinois' education goals and mandates.
